Join us for a brief overview of the method of centering prayer, a form of silent consent to the presence and activity of the Divine at the deepest center of our being. The contemplative wisdom behind centering prayer is drawn from the writings of the anonymous author of THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING (14th century), John of the Cross (16th century) Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating (20th century). Many contemplative verses of Hebrew and Christian Scriptures also inform this method of prayer.
During our hour together, an outline of the method and the theology of centering prayer will be offered, with time for questions. This introduction will also include a brief opportunity to practice the prayer.
Rev. Rob Carr served three congregations across 38 years as a pastor in the Christian Church-Disciples of Christ before his retirement in 2020. He has been practicing centering prayer for 30 years and, in association with Contemplative Outreach (founded by Thomas Keating) he has been teaching this prayer since 2002.
